Advice on a sleeping bag during summer
Hi, so i am about to travel NZ for 3 months, 1 month north, 2 south, during December - End of February. the plan is to road trip in a car and part time camp at sites, part in hostels and then also do tramps and great walks.
i have seen recommendations for a 0 (c) degree sleeping bag and am looking at a mormot one that is rated at -1, but do i really need such a warm bag for summer months? considering i will also use a liner to keep the bag clean.
will appreciate any help or tips you can throw my way... cheers
Go warmer than you think you need. That's my advice. Clearly the advice of others you've spoken to as well.
I typically use a bag with 400g of down and a Lower comfort limit of around -1c
Much of the time, such a bag is top hot for summer nights... but have had summer nights which got down to below freezing and I was glad to have the extra warmth.
Where are you going? If you are staying near sea level you are right that a light bag will do. The Warehouse sells 1000s of them. However get inland and up in height a bit and the rules change. If been in Queenstown when the temperature hasnt dropped below 20C all week but also been there with the snow down into the higher parts of town. I have a picture of my car with snow on the roof in the Remarkables skifield carpark taken on January 2nd.
Have a bag thats too warm and you can unzip it Have one not warm enough and its quite unpleasant and if its really not warm enough bad things might happen
Personally, zero deg is probably fine over Summer, depending on how much clothing you need to wear (or not) to fine tune.
Some people sleep in the liner alone or with the sleeping bag fully unzipped.
I wouldn't go warmer than you need, you can always wear extra layers, but on the other hand being too warm can mean a very poor night's sleep. With the variety of conditions our OP mentions I'd recommend a lightweight sleeping quilt (as opposed to bag), twinned with a liner.
These guys are great value (for down):-

I've the Comforter 350, weighs in at only 560g rated to -4c but being a quilt, still comfortable in high teens. Those guys do liners too.
If you buy a bag with really good quality down, you can get away with a lighter bag e.g. Montbell, ULA.
I use a 0 degree bag in Summer (old Fairydown synthetic) with a cotton liner. If it's too hot I sleep in the liner, if it gets chilly I'll wear my fleece.
ok thanks guys, appreciate the time you took to reply!
