Hut Bagging Rules- a dilemma
I'm not a dedicated hut bagger but huts do interest me a great deal. I started to count one day and got to nearly 400 but then some dilemmas started to occur.
eg. Can you count a hut that not longer exists? What if a hut has been replaced and you visit the new one, does that count as two? They are different buildings and often on slightly different sites.
Then theres the case of Totara Flats Hut in the Tararuas. When I first visited it was by the swing bridge over the Waiohine, then it moved a kilometre or so downstream and now its back to its old location. 3 distinctly different buildings on 2 sites but chronologically well seperated. Only the name remains constant. Does this count as 1,2 or 3 huts visited?

That's how I used to do it, but earlier today I was enlightened by @USAHutBagger's strong argument that it's necessary to have the full experience of that hut and the things that make it unique.
To be able to bag the hut, you need to be the person who built it and the person who eventually tears it down.
@izogi
And have at least two grandparents buried out behind the wood shed :-)
to bag it you have to be in the hut when it meets its demise...you are allowed to escape, but you must show evidence or have a witness that you attempted to stay with the hut till the very last and have at least one scar or lost limb to show for it...
I think you have to adze the wood to make the hut. Or plant the seed for the tree that makes the wood that makes the hut. Etc etc.
you have to do all of the above...
so if you're going to stipulate you have to "spend the night in the hut" to "bag it" what constitutes a night?
is getting in your sleeping bag for an hour or two for a nap not enough to "bag the hut?
do you have to occupy the hut for a minimum no of hours overnight or from at least dusk to dawn in summer or similar hours?
are you going to deny someone from saying they bagged a hut when they have been to the hut and havent met your criteria? you could set any criteria you like to invalidate a lot of people who have been to a hut to claim they have bagged it... is this about snobbery? you didnt sleep the night in it like I did so you cant claim it? good on you if you had the time to spend the night in all the huts you bagged, but sometimes people dont have the time, sounds like primary school talk to me to put extra criteria on bagging the hut.
Also put the hut into one or more bags after it's been torn down.
time to be serious again. You have to actually visit the hut. That could mean standing on the porch if its a locked hut or looking in if its open but no way can seeing it across the valley count
So you mean all those 'bags' I've made on Google Earth don't count? Grumble ... this is going to be harder than I thought!
While we're serious. I'm not a fan of bagging new incarnations of a hut. I don't think it's fair to bag Powell hut 3 times. You've been there you've been there . New hut same hut.
