Gaiter Heath Robinsons

Saw some short gaiters at Farmlands last week (Stony Creek) and thought they'd be useful to wear when full length is a bit overkill. They included a loop to affix a strap to but no straps. Therefore I'm wondering if there's a tried and true material that has proven itself with regular use. At the moment I was thinking of using clothes line (plastic coated wire) but they are difficult to secure. Best ideas how to tie? Clamp? Knot? Something that can be detached on one side reasonably quickly and adjustable according to the boot they are on. I'm not asking much am I... Thanks :-)

As I use lightweight trail shoes rather than walking boots, it's rare I wear gaiters, but have started using these:- http://www.bivouac.co.nz/footwear/footwear-accessories/gaiters/inov-8-debris-gaiter-32.html which I find are great, no doubt the under heel rubber will wear away, but I'll just repair them with fishing line I think.
@lloydy do those stretch enough to fit over your shoe, or do you slide them on first and push down and fit over the shoe?

Yeah the under shoe band fits easy enough as it's a Velcro fasting on both sides, so will be very easy to replace when they wear out.
