Anyone tried the Lansan Ultralight 2-person tent?

1–10 of 13

Has anyone used this tent? Have never got a tent from Kathmandu before, but 1.7kg sounds good. Bit odd that the inner (tent, not fly) length dimension isn't available in the product info. But I'm looking at using it for myself (<160cm) and a toddler/child so smallish "2 person" is probably ok. http://www.kathmandu.co.nz/lansan-ultralight-tent-silver.html Thanks for any opinions. (or advice on the specs)

No experience with the Lansan (mine is Macpac's Microlight) but the Microlight is 120g lighter, has better materials and it's $50 cheaper right now. LANSAN / MICROLIGHT Fly Fabric 20D / 30D Fly rating 1500 / 3000 Inner Fabric 15D / 40D Floor Fabric 70D / Torrentwear XP Floor rating 10,000 / Same Poles 9mm DAC Featherlite NSL Alloy / Same Total weight: 1.72kg / 1.6kg Price $400 / $350
1.7kgs isn't ultralight Several brands of lightweight tent that are less than 1kg exist. terra Noval Photon2, Big Agnus etc
Thanks for the replies. I'm not actually looking for Ultralight (that's just the name of the tent), just looking for something I can carry - 1.7kg is a big improvement on my current Macpac Olympus. Haha the Wee Zip sounds fantastic, only I don't have the gear required to use it. The current Macpac range were my first go-to, but I discounted the Microlight as it is marketed as 1 person. Looking at the dimensions, Lansan is 102cm wide at the ends and 125cm wide in the middle. Microlight is 130cm wide at one end, narrowing to 65cm at the other end. Unfortunately I think it would just be too small for two of us. The Exped range has some options too, although their <1kg 2-person option is a bit outside of the budget :-( I like to be able to see the real thing before I buy, so sticking to ones that hopefully I will be able to see in Chch stores.
@Chris1, I went straight to the specs of the Lansan and didn't see it was a 2-man. You're quite right the Microlight would be too narrow! We have the Exped Mira II for the times when we tramp together but it was cheaper on sale than this year's prices. Phew, $519 is a fair whack!
@chris1 I still have a Freedom Sequel which I bought on sale for tramping with my 2 son's when they were small. As a free standing dome it is quick to put up and roomy enough for 1 adult & 2 small kids. With 2 vestibules for cooking/storage it was the ideal tent for us. https://vimeo.com/81364439 I was really impressed with it so after my old Macpac Minaret finally died of UV exposure I bought a Freedom Atmos for $110 on Trademe as a stop gap solo climbing tent when my budget was tight. They are both good quality tents but just tipping the scales a bit at 2.7kg? & 2.1kg if you're the only trail donkey:) If I had to choose I would use a free standing dome tent every time with kids. Not so bad when they're small but as they get bigger and you're competing for the single entrance and vestibule it get's a bit tedious. Even a single side entrance is easier to work around than a tunnel entrance methinks. There are a few mid weight domes out there, but for Chch viewing I can only think of: http://www.completeoutdoors.co.nz/marmot-carbide-2-person-tent-xidp825595.html or the Freedom Zeus (Sequel's lighter replacement) https://www.torpedo7.co.nz/products/LIATBN640/title/freedom-zempire-2016-zeus-adventure-tent It's hard to drop those extra few hundred grams without parting with an extra few hundred dollars as you know.
Thanks 1strider. The Freedom Sequel looks tempting in the video but less so on the weight side. There's a couple of interesting ones on the Complete Outdoors site, but prices are $$$$$! I'm thinking (eventually/hopefully) it will be me, hubby and two kids, so planning to supplement the Macpac Olympus with another 2 person. Decisions, decisions...
User reviews on the Lansan... http://www.productreview.com.au/p/kathmandu-lansan-light.html More tents... although some brands I've never heard of. Some research on reputation and reviews required for those. http://www.equipoutdoors.co.nz/contents/en-us/d83_adventure_tents.html
It's a dilemma to be sure. I understand your desire to look locally but like Jetnz mentioned there are some good options & deals outside Chch at the moment. I made an ill considered purchase of a Luxe Speedup to use as a 2 person fly only shelter but it's an awkward offset crap design with a stupid mesh inner(which I don't use) and it was a waste of $200 frankly. I should have bought one of these for similar money at the time. http://www.outdooraction.co.nz/wild-country-zephyros-2-tent.html A few others here have the Zephyros and swear by them. There is a thread somewhere. The Luxe Lightwave II is a similar design http://www.equipoutdoors.co.nz/contents/en-us/p2165_Luxe_Lightwave_II.html Gearshop have them too, but if you change your mind they won't refund you but expect you to buy something else. http://www.gearshop.co.nz/collections/tents-shelter/products/wild-country-zephyros-2-tent I think the main drawback with both of these designs is the claustrophobic way the mesh inner hangs down at the ends. But that may not bother you. I was looking hard at one of these for a while but couldn't find any reviews in English that convinced me to take a punt. http://www.gearshop.co.nz/collections/tents-shelter/products/camp-tent-minima-2-sl-yellow Exceptional weight saving though at 1.32kg!!! Overall the Lansan looks a good deal but I have a set against Krapmandu, which is probably unfair.
