Te Araroa Oct. 2016 to Apr. 2017 - Partners?

Hello Forum! My name is Caitlyn, and I am a photojournalist from Ontario. Recently I have had many changes in my life that have led me to find the Te Araroa hiking trail. I am pleased to announce that I will be leaving Canada in October of 2016 to begin this beautiful tramp. I will be going North to South, starting in Cape Reinga and ending in Bluff. I've never done a big hike like this, and have been considering all of my options. Though I know I would be okay alone, I think I would rather find a hiking partner. For either the whole hike, or just bits of it. I guess it depends on who I meet and who is willing to join me. A bit about myself: I am a 22 year old female (23 by the time the hike begins) with a sense of adventure and excitement. I am very outgoing, and enjoy meeting new people and learning about new cultures. I am 6ft tall, and so far I own a 75L backpack and a 2.5 person tent. Although, on a side note. I think I should rethink my tent. 5lbs may be a bit extreme for a tramp like this. If you have any opinions on the tent situation, feel free to share. If you like laughing, talking, and enjoying the little things, then I think we'll get along just fine. I speak English, and understand a small bit of French. I wish I understood more languages, but hey - maybe I'll learn some on the way. I plan on creating a book about this adventure, and would love to have more people to add in to my life and writing. Thank you, and good luck to you all on your adventures!
Hi Caitlyn. Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you are going to have a great adventure. Its worth looking at some of the articles on the main page of the website, to give you an idea of some of the equipment you'll need and conditions you'll encounter in NZ. In regard to the tent, I'd suggest looking at a lighter and possibly smaller model. Most of the TA walkers I've met (usually at Double Hut) have lightweight tarptents or tents. Unless you are experienced in using tarptents in exposed areas and possible bad weather, I'd suggest a lightweight one person tent, with a weight below 2 lbs, certainly below 3 lbs, and some good lightweight stakes. The Hilleberg Enan would be worth looking at - lightweight and good in a storm http://www.trailspace.com/gear/hilleberg/enan/ I've used the 4 season version (the Akto) and its great (I'm 6'3). Also worth looking at other TA reports (I'm sure you already have) to see what to expect. And I'd strongly recommend getting your hands on a copy of Safety in the Mountains. It has a wealth of information on New Zealand conditions, what to plan for, what to take, and what to do when the unexpected happens (accident, river too high to cross etc). http://www.fmc.org.nz/sales/safetyinthemountains/
I'm real keen check the inbox cheers!
Hi Caitlyn, I'm going to walk the TA at Oct 2016 to with a Girl. We would love to have some company on the trail. We are both from Germany. She is 29 and I'm 31. Please send me a PM if you're interested.
Hello, I'm a 23 french student and I will take a sabbatical after my studies to hike Te Araroa. I will start in October 2016 in Cape Reinga and I would definitely enjoy meeting other passionate trampers along the way :) So if any of you feels like sharing a part of this amazing trail (or even the whole of it) or simply talking about it, feel free to send me a pm. Wish you all a successful hike!! Thibault
Hi Thibault. If you haven't already, I'd suggest looking in the Te Araroa facebook group, at https://www.facebook.com/groups/26638669574/ Heaps of past, present and future Te Araroa walkers hang out there.
I didn't know this group, thanks for the tip :)
