studying abroad
Hey,
I'm studying abroad in Auckland but really want to get in on this tramping thing. That's the whole reason I chose to study abroad in New Zealand. I'll be there from february 14- July 1.
I really want to go to Fiordland and a bunch of other places.
Does anyone have experience being there for a while?
Like what the best way to get around is and the best spots to go and just any general stuff that might benefit me?
And if anyone wants to go tramping, I am down.
welcome.
peruse the track finder on this site to look for the grade of track you are after,
the difficulty of tracks down there varies massively, the harder ones get flooded and you can get cut off for days by flooded rivers
also the doc website on doc.govt.nz
you might want to let people know what your previous experience level is and how well equipped you are.
don't under estimate how difficult nz can be, a lot of tracks may require navigation, can be very rough underfoot and the weather can turn nasty any time of the year
Auckland, ay? Shame you didn't choose Otago to study at, would have been a bit handier to Fiordland.
You'll need to fly south. I think Auckland to Queenstown has decent sales, otherwise Auckland to Christchurch is cheap. Dunedin is treated as a minor airport so is price gauged by our national air line to in-order to justify cheap flights on the more populous routes.
Intercity runs a daily bus service from Christchurch all the way to Te Anau via Dunedin. Takes about 10 hours. From Queenstown there are many buses to Te Anau but the more interesting way to get there is to walk via the mountains!
Tracknet, Info And Track, and Trips And Tramps are the 3 main tramper bus companies out of Queenstown and Te Anau. Get in contact with them if you need dropping off at a track end.
Didn't see it mentioned here but I would think your best option - especially if you are new to tramping - would be to join a tramping club. Auckland University has one.
That way you can learn skills, get advice, meet other trampers and have access to a lot of organised trips.
theres a "auckland yuf faction" tramping club on facebook, mainly but not entirely young adults and teens.
AUT also has a tramping club i believe, other large educational institutions could have them they should accept outsiders
