New Tramper, looking for gear list?
Hey guys, I'm a new tramper.
I'm wondering if anyone could link me, or rattle off a list of must have gear. Chances are most of it is obvious and I've already planned to buy/bought already. But being new there's likely things I've just not thought of and don't want to have an oh shit moment an hour before dusk when I realise I've forgotten something major :)
Been getting a feel for things by doing small hikes (just a few hours or so) in local bush. I've also been slowly buying things as I've been able to afford/felt the need for them.
As summer hits I'm wanting to start looking at over night hikes up around Russell forest with the dog.
Thanks in advance
Murdoch

@deepriver read your comment with great interest as I find exactly the same thing occurs when tramping with wife - I seem to instinctively know where we are and where we're headed (years of cub + scout training I suppose), whereas wife often has no idea. She's learned to trust my judgement over the years which saves on arguments.
I've been working on identifying landmarks and basic navigation with the 8 year old, he seems to be picking it up pretty quickly. Good skills to have when he starts doing his own thing out there.
All those millennia hunting and gathering had its benefits.
Hi @Murdoch. You'd be lucky to find anything better of New Zealand than 1:50k and 20m contours, short of enlarging existing maps but without adding detail. That's about what the country's been surveyed to by LINZ and so it's what you get in the Topo50 series which covers the whole country. Sometimes specific regions have better surveys if someone commissioned them and made it public for some reason (eg. councils sometimes do this around suburbia for planning reasons), but most people tramping would be used to relying on the 1:50k.
1:25k with closer contours is popular in some places overseas, but I'm wondering if it'd be very useful in some parts of New Zealand. A 5m or 10m change isn't always so significant if you're in a region where much larger changes are all around, and too many contours can also result in a less readable map. As usual it really depends, though.
Ironically we had 1:25k maps until the '70s. Back when the main map series was 1mile:1inch (1:63360) there was also a metric 1:25k series. Dunno why they scrapped them - cost of maintaining/printing/stocking I guess.
Was contemplating adding them to mapspast.org.nz but not done so yet.
Really? How much of NZ did they cover? Was detail any greater or were they just printed larger?
@izogi, you might want to have a look at the following;
http://www.ampro.co.nz/products/memorymap/topo.htm
States it has Topo 50 plus Topo 25.
Came across this also,
https://satmap.com/maps/australasia.html?maps_scale=35
That's interesting. Maybe I'm wrong in that case.
Looking at the 1:25k screenshots for both SatMap and MemoryMap, though, they still seem to be 20 metre contours. So I wonder if they've just taken the same survey data and digitally re-rendered it in a larger size. (You could make a 1:10 rendition easily enough but it'd have no more actual information!)
Does anyone with these products know?
Maybe for some places they're using the more detailed data where available, though. eg. 10 years back WCC commissioned a survey of 5m contours auto-generated from a rural aerial photography project, but with a disclaimer for limits on accuracy, which can be obtained from https://koordinates.com/layer/1475-wellington-city-5m-contours-2004/
Looking at the historical 1:25k sheet list coverage seems pretty patchy. i'm on a mobile so not keen to download one and look at detail due to filesize, but you can view them yourself here:
https://gdh.auckland.ac.nz/government_maps/NZMS/NZMS_002/geotif/
Hmm. Well the random one I opened (NZMS002_N134-9_1957_geo) has 50m contours. That shows Havelock North, including Te Mata Peak.
I wonder if this scale was just an aspect of the days when maps had to be bought on paper, and Lands & Survey simply provided a larger size for readability? Or there could be more detail in some aspects if the whole thing was hand-rendered anyway.
