What do you treat your boots with?

This thread branched from "DexShell waterproof socks" on . Explore the branch.

geeves - "This was in the days when boots were steel hard till the first stream despite how much neatsfoot oil and dubbin you had rubbed in. " I remember them well. Used to be the post-tramp ritual - put it on whilst the boots were still wet and it would be drawn into the leather as they dried. So what do you use on leather boots these days and is it any good?
I was told in one shop water and nothing else. Others have recomended the Nikwax boot conditioner. The catch with modern boots is the gortex inner layer which is ruined by most of these conditioners. Nice when its new but?
If the colour needs a bit of restoration, plain old nugget, followed by a liberal dose of dubbin. My boots are all leather. I only once had a pair of boots that were not pure leather destroyed in 2 months, wont touch anything like that again.
