Getting to the trail head?

Hi All, I will be backpacking through NZ From mid January to mid March without much of a plan. I won't be renting a car so I am wondering how difficult it is to get from towns/cities to the trail head. Are there any busses or transports that go out to certain areas? I read in a couple posts that hitchhiking is pretty hit and miss so are there any other tips for getting to the trails? Thanks!
Hi flapper I dont know where you are going to land so Christchurch has alot of bus lines that go to most parts of the South island. Tracknet who are based in TeAnau can take you to most of the tracks and also go to Queentown.Christchurch bus lines also go to Queenstown where you can pick up Tracknet and go back to TeAnau. Also in Queentown there is a track bus called Info and Track Bus who can take you to tracks as well Hope this helps Lindsay
