I plan to do the Kepler track in march. But I checked on the doc website, it says the Luxmore hut is not available on that date, but Iris Burn Hut and Moturau Hut are available. So can I just book the two avalable huts and bring a sleeping bag to sleep at the porch of Luxmore hut?
no, without a booking you cant sleep within 500m of the track, the ranger will give you a bollocking if you try, there are last minute cancellations sometimes. rangers do spot checks of the shelters as well. if they catch you there you'll be charged a big fine at least double the normal hut fee. quite a few people do the walk in one go between iris burn and the control gates or take the boat to broad bay in the morning
and you can't use the gas cookers in the huts without a booking, campers aren't supposed to be anywhere near the hut, they are paying for the camping facilities only
much harder climbing from the iris burn side track is much steeper, its hard enough coming down the track on that side...
