Best way to wash Down sleeping bags

1–10 of 17

Hi - sorry to start another thread on something I am pretty sure has already been covered but I cant seem to locate the previous thread. I have an old Fairydown Cobra sleeping bag. Love it to bits. Whats the best way to give it a wash and is it safe to get it dry-cleaned or will that completely ruin it? Its 90% Down. :)
Definitely dry clean Iput my 40year old explorer through the dry cleaners and it bounced back wonderfully. They put it through the dryers with tennis balls to break up and redistribute the down quite crafty i thought.
Yup, I've had one of my bags drycleaned 3 times and it is still performing well.
I discovered my <5 y.o North Face down sleeping bag had developed a severe case of mould recently. On the suggestion of colleagues I washed it in gentle washing machine cycle (top loader) with normal powder then dried in clothes dryer with 3 x tennis balls on cool setting for several hours (3 from memory). Few clumps but perfectly serviceable and they sorted themselves out during first night use. Just an option - not sure if better than dry cleaning!!
You can also get Twin Needle to wash and repair bags. They basically handle all Macpac repairs so they should know what they are doing. http://www.twinneedle.co.nz/sleepingbags.html
Awesome thanks guys. Drycleaning it is! Although Twin Needle looks like a handy place to know about too. Cheers
I just took a bunch of things into Twin Needle. The guy on the counter was knowledgeable (i.e. had a name for all the broken bits I pointed to!). They seem to be prepared to handle any repair -- I left a tent, pack, gaiters, and Therm-A-Rest with them.
"Twin Needle" I take it this paragon of virtue is in christchurch far from the maddening crowds
Yes, it's in Ferry Rd about 2km from Cathedral Square, near Jade Stadium.
i thought you couldnt dry clean down sleeping bags. wish id knew that a few months ago, i did it the old fashion way in the bath tub with some pure soap flakes. not cool, dont recommend it, takes a whole afternoon to do the whole wash, rinse & rinse a few more times cycle and drying it takes for ever... then breaking up the clumps... so yeah, that dry cleaning idea, well worth the time and money i reckon!
