Kepler - Weather Conditions in June
Hello Fello Trampers!
looking to do the kepler in june and im wanting to get a feeling for weather out there. i had a yarn to DoC and they say it could be good and bad... dosent help me alot!
im just after some info on the weather from ppl who have done the tramp near this date in previous years. any info would be great!
planning to do it in a anti clockwise direction to get a better outlook on the alpine weather from luxmore hut.
I actually think that the answer you got from DOC is a pretty good one. It depends on how much snow is around. It could be like the Antarctic up there or, if the snow hasn't come, it could be quite good.
What he is trying to tell you is that you have to be ready for anything, including turning back if it all turns to custard.
humm sounds like a i mite need a plan b tramping trip leading up to it just in case the weather packs in for the track. any recommendations?
yeah the turning back was always on the books for that tramp, wanted to do it off peak just so we dont see as many people, always thought it was weird to see so many people on tracks, like a bush highway.
We walked the Kepler in March, four years ago and it had some sleet, ice and fine weather. We were lucky. We were in Te Anau this March, doing the last few hours of the Kepler as a day walk because of bad weather conditions where we were supposed to be tramping, and met two other Aussies and a tribe of israelis coming off the tramp. Besides some bad blisters, they were knackered from walking in knee deep snow and blizzard conditions.
Also, the year we tramped it, a 50 year old Aussie died, camping out on the track, in June.
Does this help?
Cheers,
Peter.
thanks for your input, sounds like i should take DoC's advice. seems like the weather can be anything from fine to storming with snow! guess time will tell closer to the time. better start looking for a plan b tramp just in case. thanks once again.
