May 2014 updates

1–10 of 12

Hi everybody, Following is a summary of the latest updates. But first a note: if things look very broken, try clearing your browser cache. Instructions here: http://www.wikihow.com/Clear-Your-Browser's-Cache The home page has been partly redesigned. I have dispensed with the letterbox-wide "hero" image as it is simply too hard to find images that work in that format. The new image is bigger and simpler to update (which means I will have time to update it!). New geographic search pins next to the search boxes -- simply click the pin and find stuff near you. This is very much a work in progress, and I have several ideas on improving it. You may have noticed the new blog. The idea here is to provide space to editorialise. It doesn't look particularly pretty at this stage, but that's a work in progress too. At this stage, only I can post to it. However, I can imagine this feature evolving and opening up in future, and I think that could be really interesting. The navigation rail has been rearranged. I merged safety into the home menu, added an "Add..." menu as that functionality was getting a little too buried. And the blog is sitting up there too although it doesn't really deserve the spot yet. Some things that were broken are broken no longer too! Let me know if you strike any issues. I hope you like the changes -- many more to come. Matthew
Your "co-ordinate finder" in both the Maps section & near the search button place me on an island in the Marlborough Sounds rather than Christchurch City ?.
Hi @Pro-active , this feature depends on a bunch of factors such as your browser, privacy settings, and ISP. In general it works well on mobile devices (which can use GPS or cell phone towers), but it can be patchy on standard PCs. It does in fact work well enough for me, putting me in the centre of the city. There is already a location setting on your profile. I plan to add a setting so you can use this instead of the detected value if you prefer.
Blogs for all please! Grouped by member.
dont worry it thinks Im in Auckland
@madpom, that's my thinking too :)
I'm not really up on this stuff. (I know Izogi has a blog). But, is that going to end up costing dollars or blowing out bandwidth or something ?. I can see the big plus. That's a killer app on the road to super-site stardom. Just wondering ?.
One thought. the photo grid on the home page is so small I can't even guess what the photos are of. Would a 4x4 grid be better? Keen to know if others have the same issue.
Hi @Pro-active, no it wouldn't really take much space. I want to get some momentum and styling on my one first, then open the doors up. @madpom, yeah it's intended as a teaser really to encourage people to click through. However, it would make sense to make them bigger I think. There are further home page layout changes on the way.
Matthew - something wrong with posting comments on articles. See http://tramper.co.nz/?10169. Posted a comment, apparently successfully, but the text below the comment box shows 'undefined undefined undefined' instead of my comment. Any clicking on it gives an error: Element CONTEXT.USER is undefined in a Java object of type class [Ljava.lang.String; referenced as ''
