Rees-Dart (or maybe Dart-Rees!) 10 April start?

1–10 of 18

Hey, now that it's (the Dart) re-opened, give it a go? I'm aiming for this Thurs/Fri/Satur/Sunday, 10-13 April. Call me 021-152-4432, or email gideonse[at]ohsu.edu and post here if you'd like to try! See my profile for more about me. This seems a good tramp to have a partner for, although I'll probably give it a try alone if I must... I'm thinking of starting on the Dart because if the weathers turns bad it might be an easier/better turn around, but quite open to options. Advice welcome about that, and the new track around the slip (will search forums/site now...)which I really want to see. DrNick
Just FYI but if you are using the shuttles to get to and from the Rees-Dart then the morning shuttle only goes to the Rees. The shuttle to the Dart only runs in the afternoon. The new route around the lake in the Dart is supposed to take much longer then the old track, so you'll be pushing it to reach Daleys Flat Hut before its dark. My suggestion would be to stick to walking it anti-clockwise. Of coarse if you are not using the shuttles then its fine!
10-13 April is still before Easter after which is usually when everything goes into quiet winter mode. Wouldn't have thought getting a shuttle before Easter would be a problem. There's always been walkers each day I've been over that way. Guess your driver was feeling generous ;-)
at this time of year the shuttles dont even run by default... i had to pay double to get the shuttle from the dart road end because no one else had booked it... hosed me off when the driver offered a free ride to a couple of guys who's car had broken down.. .
a lot of them were taking the jetboat that day or had cars.
Just called everyone, "it's awfully quiet." No Glenorchy bookings either way except maybe tracknet in Q'Town, so double fares apply anyway whichever way I go. So I may treat myself to a jetboat or car-drop anyway, unless someone answers this call for a partner/rideshare!
i'm not sure the jetboat runs anymore, it used to do the drop off above the slip. have you rung buckleys?
Buckleys dont go to the Rees/Dart normally but you never know, someone might have chartered them. http://www.buckleytransport.co.nz/ If you can wait until Easter there should be plenty of walkers as its usually the last hurrah for the year. I certainly would be out at Easter but Im busy this year.
Info and Track run the buses out of Queenstown to the Routeburn, Greenstone, and Rees-Dart. Tracknet is based out of Te Anau and just onsells to I&T. You could also try talking directly to I&T closer to the 10th, something might come up as most tourists dont make bookings until the last minute. https://www.infotrack.co.nz/
thanks for the tips; will keep you all posted, company still welcome...
