Stove fuel

Is it possible to obtain white gas (naphtha) in NZ? If so, where? The Kathmandu store directed us to buy methylated spirits at a grocery, which is not the same thing, as it turns out (it's denatured alcohol).
Go back to that Kathmandu shop and complain. There is no way these people should get those fuels mixed up. The results could be quite dangerous. Yes, White Gas, naptha is available in NZ. It is easily available in 1 litre containers from outdoor shops. It is marketed under various names. Most people talk about white spirit, though this can be confusing because there is another cleaning product called white spirit. It is often called Coleman Fuel, Shellite (from Shell), Britilite(from BP). But I think you will find it easily discernable at outdoor shops. Kerosene and meths are sold in similar containers but the kero is usually tinted blue, the meths pink and the white spirit is just clear.
Have a look atthis site http://www.welcomehome.org/backcountry/fuel.names.txt It is a bit clunky but it has a good table compaing names of products in different countries.
Great, thank you. We didn't see anything that looked like fuel at Kathmandu - would it be available from a hardware store or from a service station?
Probably more likely to find it in an outdoor shop, any other shop than Kathmandu. What town are you in ?
Devonport - hopefully heading toward Cape Reinga tomorrow. We have a car. Any suggestions?
Not too sure what there is on the North Shore or in Northland. Someone may chip in to help here. I did a search of outdoor shops in Auckland http://www.zenbu.co.nz/search?q=outdoor++auckland and Bivouac have a couple of branches. I would be astonished if they don't stock it. I see there is a Mountain Designs in Takapuna but I just rang their branch here and they do not have it (probably because they are Australians).
Thanks - I'll see if I can figure out if we go by them or if we can get there in the morning by ferry before we head out. And I shall check this thread later to see if anyone else has helpful suggestions!
In Milford (just north of Takapuna Beach) there is a camping store, Green Coast. http://www.greencoast.co.nz/ Give them a call. Or try the outdoor store in Barry Points Road.
Green Coast has it! ("Coleman White Spirit") and they are quite close and on the way north for us. Thank you very much! I shall need to locate some in Wellington or Picton, I guess, because we're flying from Auckland to Wellington in January and I imagine it's not allowed on the plane. But our immediate needs are met, hooray! Now if only someone would fix the weather for us... :-)
