Overnight Tramp Near Wellington?
Hi,
New to the Forum and NZ,
I have a done a bit of tramping in the past but looking to start more this summer. I live in Wellington and was wondering if anyone could recommended a overnight tramp within a few hours of Wellington? Happy with Hut or Camping out Somewhere.
Thanks,
Scottish N
Hiya Scottish
Depending on your fitness the Tararua Forest Park offers some excellent over nighters for pretty much any level of fitness.
Just depends what you're looking for I guess - rivers and cruisy valley walks, the wild open spaces of the tops, a mix of both. And what level of comfort at day's end ;)
You can easily access this park from Kaitoke in the south or if you have transport (or a willing ride) from Otaki Forks or Holdsworth in the west and east respectively.
I recently did a hike into Tutuwai Hut, overnighted there and exited over Mt.Reeves. Little slog and last bit of Reeves track a bit oveergrown with gorse and slippery as you hit farmland but excellent views and Tutuwai is a cool little hut =)
Hope this helps!
Hi Scottish,
As Monkeyshine as said above the Tararuas offer weekend trips or longer to cater for any fitness level over a wide variety of terrain and weather conditions. Some of the classic trips are:
The southern crossing: start at Otaki Forks climb over Hector, along the main range to Alpha then along marchant ridge to Kaitoke.
Holdsworth-Jumbo loop from Mt holdsworth carpark.
Mt holdsworth - kaitoke via totara flats and cone
The Northern crossing between Ohau river and Mitre flats
Get a map and start dreaming!!!
Probably the best suggestion is check out some of the local tramping clubs in Wellngton. Two that come to mind are the Tarara Tramping club www.ttc.org.nz and the Wellington tramping and Mountaineering Club www.wtmc.org.nz. Both of these clubs are very active and have multiple trips away every weekend.
