New to it

Hello I am new to tramping. I am based in CHCH and would like to start looking around. Can someone suggest starting tracks within the South Island that are easy (length and grade) Wouldn't mind an overnight trip but I scare easily! many thanks M

Wharfedale is a good easy track but it is a looooooong way to the hut...probably around 11-12 kms from view hill. Start early so you have enough time to get there, and take a tent in the weekends as it can be busy.
12kms long guess it depends on your perspective :-) We did this as a return daytrip from View Hill once, took 6 1/2 hours but then we were only carrying daypacks. My favourite for an easily spooked newbie would be Lake Daniells. Flat, 8kms, good track, and the lake makes it a bit more of a destination than just heading to a hut. Took us 2 1/2 hours each way when we were newbies.
Perspective is correct - long distance for someone new to tramping but short for crusty veterans like yourself!
