Outages and performance

1–10 of 13

Hi everybody, You may have noticed there was a site outage over the weekend. I made some changes to improve performance. In doing so, I inadvertantly disabled login. Sorry about that. My primary focus at the moment is performance and resilience. However, if outages such as this continue, then I will be looking at switching to a private server. Currently, the hosting is shared, meaning other websites share space with this one. This is an economical option, but it does expose you to potential issues if there are other problem sites. Private hosting would be 3-4 times more expensive than the current option, but it may prove necessary. If that is the case, I will need to find a way to cover that cost. It has been a rough ride here for the past couple months. I am spending a lot of time working on the new site, and I do expect things to improve in terms of both functionality and performance. Is it worth adding a voluntary donation system similar to the one here http://www.clubisuzu.com/index.php That one is settup via paypal with a preset A$10 Which covers the server costs etc.
If hosting costs go up to $200 per month, I will definitely need to do that. Thanks for the link.
Hi Matthew. What kind of server specs do you need for the site? It's not located within NZ, but from http://prgmr.com/xen/ I pay US$76.80/year for a Xen-powered virtual private server (I run linux on it... not sure what OS/software you need) with 256MB RAM and a 6GB disk. I have to use a light-weight webserver with this amount of memory, but even 2GB is only US$350/year from that provider... and there are other similar ones around. I *do* have to manage my own backups, which involves daily scripts to dump the DB contents and web folders, and then regularly sync it with my home PC where it gets backed up properly.
Cheers. Well the site is running Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and Adobe ColdFusion 10 application server. So this is definitely not the cheapest platform. However, the hosting costs are pretty small compared to the cost of my time, and these technologies allow me to "get more done" in a limited amount of time. To be clear, even if a shift to VPS is necessary, it will still be pretty affordable. I would like to avoid shelling out $2200 per year for hosting, but I'd rather do that and have a stable environment. However, I would prefer to wait for scalable cloud hosting options to become affordable...which they will do, given time. If outages persist, I'll change it.
Hi Matthew,
Ok, it seams on this work computer the first time I go to www.tramper.co.nz there is no sign in option at the top of the screen and I'm hit with that error message posted above. Once I'm here on www.tramper.co.nz, if I hit Refresh on my browser the Log In option becomes visible and the error messages go away.
Matthew: seem to be able to get in ok when URL is: tramper.co.nz, but if I use the URL: www.tramper.co.nz just get a 'Welcome' screen for IIS7. Same applies for clicking any links to the www.tramper.co.nz addresses.
Thanks. Fixed that. Aside from all the little issues, the site seems to be running quicker, and caching is still turned off.
Matthew - unrelated images / huts have stared appearing on one of the tracks I created ... Looking at the revision history neither the article nor the photo nor the hut have been edited to add the 'related info' to them since I created them, so I assume this is a bug. Track is: http://www.tramper.co.nz/?8401 Matt
