Routeburn Swing Bridge Damage
Hi. I'm planning on doing half the Routeburn in mid October (from RB Shelter to Falls hut - maybe walk up towards Lake Harris depending on snow and weather).
I have just read that the swing bridge at the start of the track is damaged by a fallen tree. Is there any other way across?
Has anyone heard how long it might take to re-open the bridge?
Thanks for any help.
Here it is! However, it is the off-season now. I would be very surprised if it wasn't fixed by mid-October.

Under normal conditions the river is easily fordable at that point anyway. Probably best done 100m or so upstream from the bridge
There are are a couple of places within 5 minutes walk from the shelter to cross in NORMAL conditions, be prepared to get wet to about knee - thigh height.
As mentioned above, the bridge will most likely be repaired by then, you could email doc to check before leaving queenstownvc@doc.govt.nz
I just received an email from DOCS Queenstown. The bridge is fixed and good to g. The track is very messy at the moment with lots of fallen trees and debris.
I'd take that info from DOC with a grain of salt. They told me the C&G nearby was "really bad with a lot of windfall, it'll take you double the time for each day". When in reality there were just a few fallen trees, very easy to get over/round and it must have added about 1.5 hours to my whole 4 day trip.
Mind you, the Routeburn is a lot more exposed so you never know...
