Hi Kate,
My wife and I just finished a quicker version of Hollyford. We flew into Martins Bay Lodge on 24Jan. An easy 1 1/2 hour walk to the DOC hut. Great spot right on the estuary. Plenty of seals and pups on long reef point, make sure you have the DEET, the sandflies are vicious. The next day we got the jetboat to Mcerrow Island and walked to Hidden Falls Hut in the rain. The Demon trail to Pyke River bridge is pretty boggy and rocky but well marked and fairly flat, took us about 5 hours to Alabaster hut which is a big, new hut right on the lake. From Alabaster to Hidden Falls was about 2 1/2 - 3 hours on an easy flat track. We had Hidden Falls hut all to ourselves, then took about 2 1/2 hours to the roadend but most would walk out to the roadend from Alabaster (5 hours or so)
Thanks Glenn , sounds good am really looking foward to it ,we do plan to walk the complete track but having the option is great cheers
Well guys, we didn't make the Hollyford or the Caples. Tramped the Greenstone in beautiful weather, then bused it to Milford to fly to Martin's Bay next day. Waited 2 days in torrential (300mm) rain but no transport in. DOC's said that even if we did get in would probably not get out for several days extra because of the water comong down the cliffs. So ended up having extra days at Te Anau doing short day walks in rain and freezing weather. Was a shame, but we will try the Hollyford again next year. Anyone else walk in or out (not counting the jet boat) between 6th and 9th March?
to petter1945:no sound mad if it was raining so much....when we had a hut day in Demon Trail Hut 2 drowned Japanese came, you could see huge waterfalls across the lake and the next day the flood route of the river was bigger than a any river and the lake alabaster was fulled up and you could no longer walk round the shoreline.
Amazing amount of rain, don't know why we are gonna walk haast-milford(this christman) if it rains so much in that place
