Dore Pass in Late August
I am wondering if anyone has crossed Dore Pass during the winter months (late August) and could give me some information regarding it, specifically if you needed ropes, how long it took, and the avalanche risk in the valley. I have been told conflicting reports about it and was hoping to receive more feedback. Thank you.
Ah yes, Dore Pass, been over there many times but not for a long time. I did once cross it in waist deep snow May, we went like the clappers because of the avelanche risk. We didn't see any avalances that day but they might be an issue.
The thing with Dore Pass is that you go straight up to the pass, pretty much following your nose from the Eglington side. When you are at the pass it is tempting to want to drop straight down to bushline on the other side.
Infact what you have to do is climb slightly above the pass to the north and then sidle to a prominent ridge that you can see. There is a track descending to Glade House on that ridge.
The route above bushline was marked with warratahs. They might be still there.
I would think that the greatest risk point would be on that sidle. I recall a short section which was quite steep and you wouldn't want to slip. It was only a short stretch of a few metres.
I guess you would also want to look for avalanches falling from above at any other place above bushline.
Dore Pass is a wonderful place. I hope you enjoy it.
