So, where are you tramping over the weekend?

Overniters or day trips. Be interesting to know where we go. The weather looks pretty crappy in general, so there may not be too much going on at the moment. We find it hard to start walking in the rain, but if it happens while we're out there it's not so bad.

Ended up going over to Daley's Clearing Hut for the night from Te Aroha Township via the Mangakino Track and out via Franklin Road today. The Mangakino track from Tui Saddle to the shelter is fairly clear, but from the shelter to Daleys was quite heavy in windfalls. The Mangakino Shelter is a good solid structure (roof, no walls) but the area was very damp. Remains of Dog Kennels and fire place indicate it must have been a popular stop over at some point. It took us just on six hours to reach the hut, with the last hour in the dark due to getting away a bit late. All in all a great tramp. My ten year old son won't forget his first overnight tramp in a hurry.
Got to Kauritatahi Hut. Great trip. See entry for the hut at http://www.tramper.co.nz/?3102 and the GPX of the trip at http://www.tramper.co.nz/?3103
three of us went to maketawa hut from dawson falls via the lower track for the night. we just beat the rain. went back today via top rtm track, still snow up there and the rain was incessant, good fun though, good to get out, had the hut to ourselves, the heavy rain warning must have scared everyone off!
My son Pablo(9)and I went into the Blue Range hut on Sunday, track info states two hours but we found it just over three, but I guess nine year olds have pretty short legs! The track is reasonable throughout but no water till the hut so it pays to stock up for the long grind up the spur.Blue Range hut is amazing, maybe the nicest hut in the Tararuas and a real credit to the M.T.C.It rained the entire time so it was a great lesson for the boy about enjoying the outdoors regardless of the weather.
no matter where we are heading to this weekend, after yesterdays sad death up on my mt taranaki, it just shows how cruel mother nature can be to us trampers, and how careful we all have to be. however it should not stop us from heading out, but rather treat the bush with respect, and above all- have fun. unfortunately i will be on call for work so will have to wait till next weekend before i can head out again.
Yes, very sad. We were in a similar position 2 weeks ago when my midweek group went up to Burn Hut (Tararuas), up on top it was horizontal rain, really uncomfortable, so turned back instead of having lunch at the hut. Within the 2 hrs the trickly streams that came up to ankles had turned into waist high raging rivers (3 of them) Luckily we had stocky guys with us to brace us light girls in the water, otherwise we were facing a grotty nite out. How quickly things change.
What a contrast to a month ago walked to Omaru hut then back over the range via cascade hut in the kaimanawas. Weather was good last of the rain had gone and the rivers where dropping fast but more importantly no snow. Some track damage but not bad. Blue duck in the TT and a number of Kiwi making a racket at cascade made it an enjoyable trip but the knees now need a break after the up and down.
Which route did you take? This one over Maungaorangi http://www.tramper.co.nz/?2834 or via the Kaipo http://www.tramper.co.nz/?2832
Did the circuit down Te iringa and oamaru tracks then following your good guidence over Maungaorangi. My legs thank you and my knees hopefully will recover. Stopped in Taupo for a bite to eat and a cup of coffee and couldnt get out of my seat after everything locked up tight. The things we do. Im definitely going to reduce my walks to 2 days not these extended things
Just turned the Kaweka & Kaimanawa park maps over and out the door went that last idea have you walked the Matauria ridge track, Mackintosh spur, Studholm saddle and Kaweka circuit. Two busy days?
