I have one of the early Garmin etrex. Does anyone have the numbers to type into the 'Position Format' to make it compatible with Topo50? Or can someone guide me through the process
Yep. It's on the LINZ website: http://www.linz.govt.nz/topography/topo-maps/topo50/gps
And of course there's also pmcke's helpful article published on the prestigious NZ Tramper website, which specifically targets the bright yellow Garmin eTrex: http://tramper.co.nz/?4856
Thanks izogi. I used Pete's very simple and clear instructions http://tramper.co.nz/?4856 Wonderful to be able to use it properly.
To make your brand new Garmin etrex Legend HCx with factory settings compatable with NZTOPO 50. Step 1. Turn GPS on. Step 2. Press Exit button till Main Menu page appears. Step 3. Scroll to Setup. Press Enter. Step 4. Scroll to Units. Press Enter. Step 5. Scroll to Position Format. Press Enter. Step 6. Scroll to New Zealand TM. Press Enter. Step 7. Press Exit button. Turn GPS off. When you restart your GPS should now be compatable with the NZTOPO 50 maps. Any previously saved Waypoints will be converted automatically.
