Documents leaked to National suggest DoC shake-up is on the cards https://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/news/politics/documents-leaked-to-national-suggest-department-of-conservation-shake-up-is-on-the-cards/ The document, which National passed on to media this morning, outlines a number of draft recommendations from the Options Development Group – a body tasted with reviewing conservation policies. The group has recommended that the Conservation Act be reviewed and replaced with a system which better honours Te Tiriti/ the Treaty of Waitangi. It also asks that the Government reforms all conservation entities, including DoC, to better reflect Te Tiriti partnerships, and that the Crown revokes its ownership of indigenous species.
""The draft document recommends the entire DOC estate is reformed, the Conservation Act replaced, and the functions and powers of the DOC estate are delegated, devolved, and transferred to tangata whenua. “This is not just National Parks, but the entire DOC estate. That is 85 per cent of the West Coast, for example,” Ms Collins says."" https://thebfd.co.nz/2021/05/09/judith-collins-govt-must-be-upfront-about-its-plans-for-doc-land/ Copy of "The draft recommendations from DOC’s Options Development Group" included in the link.
Large on ‘Aspirations’, short on detail Does it mean DOC ceases to exist ? Or is it taken over and run by iwi ? Regardless, it needs to be open for public discussion Not enough info to draw any meaningful conclusion.
Yes it'd be helpful to have more than Judith Collins' extrapolation of a document she's seen. From her explanation it could be as fragile as someone having taken a photo of half a powerpoint slide at a non-specific hui they attended. Phrases like "That is 85% of the West Coast, for example", make it sound like she's more interested in stirring up race tension in a potential voter base than genuinely talking about conservation outcomes. It could be interesting when there's some real information about something that's really being proposed. Or maybe not.
The draft document is featured in the link. Make the effort & see for yourself. Double dare you !. https://thebfd.co.nz/2021/05/09/judith-collins-govt-must-be-upfront-about-its-plans-for-doc-land/ Right-click on the document & select "Open image in new tab" to bring it up to more readable size.

Sorry @Pro-active, I was looking at @waynowski's original post and missed your comment. Based on the image my opinion hasn't changed. It's a low res picture of one page in a document showing draft considerations without context and which haven't been formally recommended in a meaningful way. Government agencies, companies, organisations, everything, have internal communications and documents all the time. It's how they communicate internally and consider stuff, and maybe this made it to a hui somewhere for informal discussion, but again there's no context. If and when this makes it to some official kind of official proposal, which it might but it also mightn't, then I think it'd be more interesting.
""“I received this document from someone who attended the hui and was deeply concerned about recommendations from the He Puapua report being implemented without the Government being upfront about it.”"" So. You right-click on "The draft recommendations from DOC’s Options Development Group" document. Select 'Open image in new tab'. Now the draft recommendations from DOC’s Options Development Group is a full size page. Where the draft document recommends the entire DOC estate is reformed, the Conservation Act replaced, and the functions and powers of the DOC estate are delegated, devolved, and transferred to tangata whenua, has been underlined in blue. https://thebfd.co.nz/2021/05/09/judith-collins-govt-must-be-upfront-about-its-plans-for-doc-land/ ""The final report will be given to the Director-General in mid-2021. Public consultation will take place on the proposals in late 2021."" This is a nightmare waiting to happen. Look at what happened to one tree(no tree) hill and mt eden in auckland. Local iwi "got given them" and it didnt take long to shut them to vehicular traffic. Stated cultural reasons but they continued to run vehicular tours themselves. Then no vehicles at all because road maintenance was not done and roads became unsafe-just to tight to maintain roads but the running costs are still paid for by ratepayers.
