Tahr, deer numbers ‘out of control’ on West Coast

Dr McSweeney told this month's West Coast Tai Poutini Conservation Board meeting that the tahr population was exploding in the high country, and recreational and trophy hunters were not able to control it. https://www.odt.co.nz/rural-life/rural-life-other/tahr-deer-numbers-%E2%80%98out-control%E2%80%99-west-coast
Re the West Coast; I don't know that deer numbers are out of control but there are a few around. I haven't been in thar country for a while so won't comment except to say they seem to graze in groups and graze out small areas then move on. The chamois are the animals I've noticed having steadily rising numbers. There are plenty around both above and below the bushline in places. Chamois are being seen outside their old ranges. Pig liberations have ensured that there are now areas with wild pigs where they were absent in the 1970's.
Tahr cull tops 12,000 but native plant life 'may take years' to recover https://www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald/news/119775242/tahr-cull-tops-12000-but-native-plant-life-may-take-years-to-recover
Forest and bird just posted on facebook claiming the high court just authorised removal of tahr from national parks and reduction of numbers on other conservation land .
Justice Dobson’s decision says DOC ‘’is to reconsider its decision to proceed with the 2020-2021 plan after consulting with interests represented by the Foundation and other stakeholders’’. https://www.stuff.co.nz/timaru-herald/news/122093650/doc-told-to-reconsider-tahr-cull-programme
F&B has placed the decision on its website: https://mcusercontent.com/056bc28505444958c9358e331/files/59b11a5e-4ebe-4b4b-9cd5-7248c121f476/The_NZ_Tahr_Foundation_Inc_v_Minister_of_Conservation.pdf I haven't read it in detail but a brief summary I've seen second hand (thanks Geoff Keey from F&B) is: Tahr Foundation accepted in Court that numbers have to be reduced to 10,000; DOC is meant to be eradicating tahr in national parks; DOC can target bull tahr in national parks; DOC can do the first half of its cull while it consults hunters and other stakeholders.
forest and birds summary https://www.forestandbird.org.nz/resources/too-many-tahr-high-court-says
"But based on the return figures from the aerial-assisted trophy Hunters (AATH), they have only shot an average of 67 bull tahr per year in the two national parks over the last five years." Even if those figures are understated, thats a drop in the bucket. The hunter groups aren't helping with this.
recreational hunters will only kill a few tahr at a time. contract hunters will kill as many as they are allowed to. watch the hunting shows.... the recreational hunters are very picky about what they will shoot. how many plangs will a mature tahr munch through in its lifetime? recreational hunters want the mature animals only.
Simply shooting, and leaving the carcases, in the hills, is stupid They are a resource. The only Tahr Herd in the southern hemisphere Overseas hunters will pay a fortune to hunt them, takIng only the head and skin. What we need is these foreigners paying to hunt, the carcases recovered, and used to feed the hungry ( like the Wapiti foundation did ) We get overseas money, tourism gets a boost, the animal is fully utilised. Rather that, then the poor old taxpayer coughing up for chopper time, contractors to do the shooting, snd the animals left to rot. Overseas hunters pay us, and solve the problem. Seems logical to me.
