Hiring out your gear.

1–10 of 13

I saw an ad on facebook yesterday for https://www.flack.co.nz You can hire out your gear and other stuff. Was just wondering if anyone has tried it? Thought it could be good to get some money back on my equipment.
what comeback have you got if your gear gets trashed? you've no idea the sort of person who's hiring your gear or how careful they will or won't be with it... I"ve had enough problems hiring to friends when i found out they werent nearly as careful with gear as I thought. I"ve gone to a bit of trouble to get specific items of expensive gear from around the world on good deals, it says you're covered based on proof of purchase price if you still have it.. and a lot of my purchases were made at hard to get discounts..., it lso says they pay based on the condition of the item , are they really experts on what the price is? so you may not get replacement value. without proof of purchase price, then what?. .

Good point, cheers for that. Guess it depends on whether you're willing to take the risk.
With my misanthropic take on life, I wouldn't dream of it. Happy to lend stuff to friends though. That way you soon find out if they really are your friends!

Interesting. I've recently seen posts for another gear hire site that is in the works https://www.mutu.co.nz/ I'm probably more in the 'I'll use the sites to hire/try gear but probably won't use it to lend my own gear out' camp.

Simply no way I would allow a stranger to use most of my gear. Even with friends I would only lend to those who have the skills and awareness to look after stuff. Exception - my PLB - I encourage folk to take it with them. Folk in general just don't know enough to appreciate some of this stuff. They don't know the value of technical gear. They don't know how to look after it. And they don't know how hard it can be to replace.

I lent a tent to a friend in the past. That friend had several years as a scout leader. Simple dome tent. Another friend ended up helping him put it up after he had been trying for an hour in the rain.

lent an aluminium bottle to a friend, pretty robust, so sure to get it back OK. he walked on it with crampons and crushed it...

Yah, but did he replace it ?. I've lent hiking sticks to a newbie doing a club qualifying tramp & been handed them back bent & useless.
Loaning gear on a case by case basis. ie answer is no unless they can convince me otherwise. I will and have loaned gear to make sure a trip goes that I have been on. Things like a second stove when we have needed 2 stoves and no other group member has one. Really thats not loaned at all but just carried by someone else.
