Couple missing in Kahurangi National Park

https://www.police.govt.nz/news/release/search-commences-overdue-trampers Police are asking for the public's help to locate two trampers who failed to return from the Kahurangi National Park when expected. Jessica O'Connor and Dion Reynolds, both 23 and from the Tasman area, started out on 9 May and have not yet returned. The pair are understood to have entered near the Anatori River car park. Police staff commenced a search today. This will resume again tomorrow morning. Police are asking for anyone who has been around the Anatori, Webb, Kokopu, Independent and Fraser rivers since 8 May and who may have seen the pair to get in touch. Anyone with information should contact Police on 105 and quote event number P042228949.

“I haven't heard an official apology but I certainly saw tears of gratitude and happiness and relief when they were rescued. "I'm picking that reflecting over the next few days and probably having a look at the media messaging that's around about … I think the apology will be coming." That would seem the appropriate conclusion to their escapade
The knives are really out for them on social media purely because of this. It seems inconsistent to me. On that $20k cost, is that likely to include the NH90 cost, or would Police not be including that? And on the NH90 thing, to what extent is it accurate to say that the Air Force would be flying them around anyway whether it was helping people or not? I've seen plenty of people elsewhere citing the cost of it but I'm not clear on the comparative costs. Does the NZDF use this sort of thing as exercises which they'd otherwise be doing elsewhere anyway, or is it a genuine extra cost above the usual?
mmmmm....if it had been me. At some stage i would be thinking back to the period before the rescue. I would be forced to remember all the things i would have considered giving in order to effect a rescue. I've heard of examples where those rescued have made donations of some kind or other. Probably more out of appreciation rather than some kind of guilt. Most probably just a token offer. As i understand it these people were doing the wrong thing by being there. Would an apology be some kind of admission of guilt? Maybe from a legal standpoint. They are young and will earn a good deal in their lifetime. It seems like they are likely to tramp again. How much is it worth to them to have a service which responds like it does? mmmmmm.
The reason I say inconsistent is because thousands of people have been doing arguably worse things (congregating in parties) than going tramping in an isolated place a few days before NZ went to level 2 and when virtually everyone expected that would happen for up to a week before. These people have walked themselves into the target point of all the focused vengeance that some of the public have for anonymous Covid-19 rulebreakers. No, it wasn't okay, but in perspective they're strongly on the tame end of likely Covid consequences. In any case it's encouraging to see the GiveALittle page for LandSAR has nearly reached $33,000. https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/bring-home-jess-oconnor-and-dion-reynolds

cost of running an NH90 was stated in 2005 at $6000-8000 per hour.. fuel alone is around 400 litres per hour it has 2x2000hp engines. its way bigger than the vast majority of helicopters in NZ only the odd russian helicopter here is of similar size. its a lot bigger than the old Iroqouis. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10391868
the story of the 18 yo who tried to cross cook straight in a dinghy makes for interesting reading he's very experienced on bigger boats. took nothing but a life jacket and compass with him, thought it would take 6 hours to wellington from kenepuru sound, https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/121670130/i-was-on-an-adventure-teen-who-crossed-cook-strait-in-dinghy-speaks-out
Probably everybody here has been inspired/encouraged/motivated by written accounts in books of early NZ explorers and pioneering trampers, deer cullers etc. There’s always a sense of astonishment at some of the choices they made and antics they got up to. Cases of ‘needs must’ and making do are always interesting. This account is none of those! The shear lack of preparation and casual attitude of “calling the Coastguard” smacks of foolhardy arrogance, nothing more. Land and sea are quite different when things go wrong. If things had gone right for him this time what about the obvious return trip, or had he not thought that far ahead?
Always amazed at the people who haven't even checked the weather forecast. (He didn't). https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/121670130/i-was-on-an-adventure-teen-who-crossed-cook-strait-in-dinghy-speaks-out
Rescued tramper Jessica O'Connor thanks rescuers after 19 day ordeal https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/121678731/rescued-tramper-jessica-oconnor-thanks-rescuers-after-19-day-ordeal
So what's known about the effects of a SAR op like this on net flying times and expense of the NH90s, given the crews presumably have to clock up a certain amount of hours anyway? Do they fly more or do they just shift the flying as part of a SAR op?
