Alpine route Mt.Richmond or Traverse-Sabine ?
Hello people!
With the warm season coming up dreams start to get more alive.
I would be interest on two particular treks.
1)Alpine route in the nelson area
or
2)Traverse sabine circuit.(If I'm not wrong @berend did last summer)
Did someone of you did both?
Which one would you suggest?
Any particular recommendations?
Would love to do this end of Jen/Feb.
Please feel free to comment.
richmond ranges will be full of TA walkers overloading the smaller huts...
Good point wayno.
By the way what you exactly mean with TA walkers?
walking the Te Araroa Trail. about a thousand last year

I'm also coming to NZ end of Jan/Feb and was looking for ideas...
So, on one of those (which one btw?) places in huts might be problematic?
@marian anywhere along this route, any one of a number of huts in an easy days walk of a road end.

@waynowski
Hence they might be busy...
Hmm, I'll have a look at my tent or other options (probably not Great Walks though).
I make no bones about my feelings regarding TA. Hugely disappointing that it's routed through both the incredible Alpine Route in Mt. Richmond Forest Park and the sublime Travers Valley.
Consider Kahurangi, Leatham Conservation Area, Lake Sumner Forest Park as alternatives to the madding crowds on TA.

theres no might about it,, there are up to 15 TA walkers staying at 5 person huts, if the weathers bad often their tents arent up to it so they cram into the huts, every year the numbers increase by several hundred people... locals in the know avoid walking on the TA in summer where theres small huts and exposed alpine tramping
Big height gains on the alpine route. When we did trips in Mt Richmond Forest Park, we were always surprised how empty the huts were (and how good the huts were, especially the pot belly stoves). I guess that's changed now where the TA goes.
