Why is Caroline Hut there? On lake Hauroko

There is no foot access to Caroline Hut, on the west side of lake Hauroko. I wonder what the history of it is? Was it an early-settler's homestead site? A hunter's hut? An alpine club hut for climbing Mt Caroline? https://tramper.nz/6233/caroline-hut/
I would of thought deer hunters hut but the picture shows a younger hut than the standard deer cullers huts
friend down there thinks its for the deer stalkers..
For deer hunters with the hut to be accessed by boat. Notwithstanding that some people do walk the untracked country from the Lilburn access. I've been to Lake Monowai from there and south to Hump Ridge but don't think Caroline Hut existed when I was living down that way. Some of the lake side huts in Fiordland used to be serviced by float planes in the pre helicopter days.
Thumbs up

Looking at the topo it would be a mission to walk round that lake without tracks
Quite possibly! Parts of the bush adjacent Hauroko used to be quite good going and other places you used to strike away from the shore and use ridges. If I still lived down there I'd give it a go walking to Caroline Hut. We used to roam parts of southern Fiordland where there were no tracks both for recreation and while working for the NZFS/Parks Board. I lived in southern Fiordland for 18 months based in huts and tent camps.
