> and illegally bought high capacity magazines Was it really illegal to buy the high capacity magazines? I've read in a few places (criticising an apparent aberration in the law) that buying them was legal without any specific licence. It's just illegal to then use them to modify an A-category firearm. eg. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/christchurch-shooting/111361160/a-beginners-guide-to-firearms-gun-licences-and-gun-law-in-new-zealand > "Further, firearm magazines are unregulated and don't require a licence to purchase. So anyone can buy a 50-round AR-15 magazine, place it into an AR-15 bought with a standard licence, and fire away. > "Retailers such as Gun City warn customers buying high-capacity magazines for A-Cat firearms breaks the law, but aren't required to check or enforce this. > "As the law stands, a standard licence holder can only lawfully use a high-capacity magazine in a rifle or shotgun that's not semi-automatic."
HIS THREAD IS FOCUSING ON NEWS ABOUT MINIMISING THE NO OF FIREARMS IN NZ. STICK TO THE TOPIC Wayno and Berend, Please stop. This thread has become a back and forth between you two on the most efficient firearms to take to a mass shooting.
@izogi, you might be right. I thought you needed an E-cat license to purchase a high capacity magazine, but I'm now less sure of what that means. You might be right that this isn't illegal or perhaps that having an E-cat license isn't being verified. PS: update, you are right, [buying high capacity magazines is not illegal](https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/christchurch-shooting/111361160/a-beginners-guide-to-firearms-gun-licences-and-gun-law-in-new-zealand), just the modification was. Thanks for that, clearly something that I would like to see regulated. PPS: should have read your full quote. It's confusing, because as you quote: "Retailers such as Gun City warn customers buying high-capacity magazines for A-Cat firearms breaks the law, but aren't required to check or enforce this." So looks to me it is actually illegal? I'm flabbergasted we didn't have a check for this.
@izogi is correct. Anyone can buy a magazine. As outlined by @izogi there is an inconsistency in the law that, as I understand it, goes: Any license holder can buy a AR-15 with a standard mag Any person can buy a large volume mag (30/50 round) Put larger mag in AR-15. You now have an E-cat weapon that should be specifically registered to your name. However, it is not registered to you and you do not need to have an E-cat to have done this.
Thumbs up

@Berend What the quote means is, it is illegal to put the larger magazine in the gun and use it. It is not illegal to buy the components separately.

@Dodgydave the quote says: "Retailers ... warn customers buying high-capacity magazines for A-Cat firearms breaks the law" So as I read it buying a high calibre license is breaking the law. And I can't believe the law didn't require checks for this. Crazy. PS: can you put the high calibre magazine in an AR15 without illegally modifying it? I thought you had to make modifications, i.e. it doesn't fit automatically.
As far as I am aware it fits fine and is designed to do so. (I am no expert on this, however.)
this thread has been off topic for some time, branch off to another tread if you want to talk about the ins and outs of weapons, it was about news about reducing the nos of firearms. i've asked matthew to delete the thread, but i havent had a response.
Military-style semi-automatic weapons, and all assault rifles, are to be banned: https://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/385268/pm-jacinda-ardern-says-new-zealand-will-ban-all-military-style-semi-automatic-weapons-and-all-assault-rifles As of 3pm today it's illegal to sell them. There will be a buy-back scheme for those in possession, and an amnesty for those in illegal possession. Meanwhile in the FishNHunt forums, a new user called @Kiwigunguy is imploring people to not comply with the incoming legislation. http://www.fishnhunt.co.nz/forum/YaBB.cgi?num=1553139395
"Meanwhile in the FishNHunt forums, a new user called @Kiwigunguy is imploring people to not comply with the incoming legislation. http://www.fishnhunt.co.nz/forum/YaBB.cgi?num=1553139395" That got deleted fairly quickly!
