missing 60yo in tararuas

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has joined the search for a 60-year-old man missing in the Tararua Range.
Police said the man started a four-day tramp in the mountain range north of Wellington on Thursday, January 31 and was due home on Sunday.
Incident controller Senior Constable Pete Cunningham said a ground search of tracks and huts started on Tuesday and would continue on Wednesday.
Defence Force Air Component Commander Commodore Tim Walshe said a Royal New Zealand Air Force NH90 helicopter had been brought in to help with the search on Wednesday afternoon.

Due home on Sunday, reported missing on Tuesday, so not looking too good. I would say luckily it's summer, but it's in the Tararuas, so I don't think summer has arrived there yet.
FYI (and no critcism relating to the SAR op) a Stuff commentator remarked these things cost $25K per hour to operate.
Probably peanuts in the scheme of things ?.

because it was made to transport groups of people and heavy equipment...
one advantage you can transport more SAR people around on each flight...

arguably its contributing to the economy be helping saving peoples lives,
i've been told by SAR the search is focusing on the Carkeek area
they couldnt find another helicopter that could get in in the weather conditions... so they called in the airforce, it was that or no helicopter at all

I wonder if there's any useful info on this - rather than just the usual hamfisted media statements of "Tararuas Bad?"
Was he around the Carkeek area? I'd be interested as I was there 2 weeks ago - wonder if he was doing the informal track down to Park Forks, or if he came unstuck coming down from Lancaster in poor viz?
They keep going on about the Tararuas being bad because of a high incident count but what other mountain range is on the doorstop of 2 major cities 5 major towns and 10 smaller towns with a total population within a 45 minute drive of close to 500000 people.
Waitakaries maybe but do they qualify as a mountain range

Much warmer here, Waitakere nothing compared to Tararua. Has only hills.
