Maps of space and time
What do maps do? That seems easy: they locate you in space. But they can also put you in time.
Ngāi Tahu's innovative Kā Huru Manu is one of those maps. As an interactive cultural mapping project, online at kahurumanu.co.nz, it layers original Māori place names and travel routes (known as kā ara tawhito) over the familiar shape of the South Island, restoring its lost histories.
