Tararua plane wrecks
Hi guys. Planning a trip into the Tarries soon. Wondering if you guys could inform me on any plane wrecks. I'm interested in getting around to see them all. Details of where, much to see etc... would be appreciated.
I know of a couple:
- Kaipararo (been to)
- Shingle slip wreck
- North king?
- Maungahuka wreck? Removed?
Thanks very much
I stumbled on this one a few years ago.

Didn't know anything about it at the time, and came across its fuselage hanging in the trees. Its not hard to find as it is right on the ridge line at about the 1200m contour on the north ridge between spot heights 1345 & 840 between Nichols & Mt Crawford.
This is funny as it was the next thing I was thinking of doing after I get all the tarry huts!
Is the Kaipararo one the flight trainer accessed from the the track beginning at the quarry rd/waitohu stream? See this trip report (Im still not totally sure on the exact location of this as there are a couple of tracks this WTMC group could have taken:

I was at Carkeek last week and I heard rumours of a crashed helicopter there - but didnt see anything near the hut.
Shingle slip - for sure - its most impressive and well worth the trip.
See these reports also on another wreck (north king?): https://www.ttc.org.nz/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/TripReports/2009-10-14-McKerrowTrack-WhakanuiStream

I also have a pdf history of the tararuas and there are some approx locations for some of the plane crashes detailed in there.
The 1995 Dash 8 crash enroute to Palmy North is also quite fascinating (even though this was removed) as the ground proximity warning system malfunctioned "for reasons not determined."
One of the bits of trivia about the Shingle Slip Knob wreck is that it was stolen in 2009, by Wairarapa Helicopters and the New Zealand Sport and Vintage Aviation Society, who were putting together an aviation museum.
DOC made them to return it to the site. Apparently they "weren't aware" of the need to seek consent to simply take this stuff away, nor had they intended to desecrate a grave site.

Thanks everyone. Much appreciated. Si-dog: The Kaipararo plane wreck track is near the bush edge of Mt Kaipararo, accessed from Kaipararo road end. Track to it is easy to find as it is well marked with tape. Plane wreck is 15 mins from the main track. Very good views of Cattle ridge and Mitre peak on a good day.
