An overnighter to con my girlfriend

1–10 of 13

Hi, I'm looking for an overnight track around the north half of the North Island to take my girlfriend on. It would be her first overnight tramp, so I am keen to take her on one that is scenic, and not very challenging. Sounds like the dream tramp right? Right. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Ta
Not too sure where in the upper north island your from but the whirinaki is a great experience for someone new to tramping. It's a mission to get there and feels as remote as it gets in the north island. It's very easy tramping country in magnificent ancient forest.
Have you considered Waitawheta Hut or Cape Brett or Te Paki (maybe just an overnighter on this one)? - https://tramper.nz/5001 - https://tramper.nz/322 - https://tramper.nz/8353 Agreed on Whirinaki. The first section in is just beautiful.
Pinnacles Hut in the Coromandel is pretty awesome. Ah yes, conning people into thinking tramping is something enjoyable... Kinda like taking a beginner up the Far West T-bar at Whakapapa and assuring them that you'll teach them to ski on the way down. Mua-ha-ha-ha!
pinnacles hut sleeps 80, often there are big school or other youth groups in it...
Thanks all for the suggestions! Am in Auckland but keen to drive a few hours to go somewhere nice. Would love to head to Whirinaki, the distance isn't too much of a barrier, but the question of getting back to the car the next day might be. Anyone got a good way around that? That one to Whaitawheta hut looks like a good option too Matthew, thanks Otherwise the Pinnacles sounds like a good option too.
The whirinaki can be done as an overnight loop
OK one more from me. If you're willing to go to Whirinaki, which is indeed incredible, another idea would be Tongariro off the Desert Road to Waihohonu Hut. Depending on where in Auckland you are, it'll be a 4.5 hour drive to Minginui and about the same to Tongariro. You can park off the Desert Road south of Turangi and it's an easy 2 hour stroll to a literal mansion of a hut: solar lights, hot water available, massive and open common room, with tremendous views of Ngauruhoe and Ruapehhu. This may prep your partner for when you're staying in a creaky canvas 2-bunk bivvy with no wood burner during a downpour...
While you are into the con. Also think about taking a decent mattress for her. I've found that a good nights sleep can make all the difference with some folks perspective.
If she is so inclined a lazy bottle of wine and a bit of chocolate in the pack is a nice surprise for her when you get to the hut. I used to take my missus to less visited spots as to try and get the hut to ourselves. Far more romantic than a big busy hut. A dip in the river, a fire, a bottle of wine, steak, some chocolate, candles, towering ancient trees and the sound of the river . This is why I chose whirinaki. I took my missus to cow creek hut for her first proper tramp, and she still comes so it works.
Thumbs up
