Boo Boo hut Loop
Looking at going into Boo Boo hut and looping out and over Zit saddle and out to our start point. Is this a do-able loop, tips, snow etc.
My computer tells me it's a minimally maintained hut, overdue for replacement, on a track no longer maintained by DoC. Permolat Group has given it some attention.
Can't get a 10-day forecast for Zit Saddle, but the 3-day forecast is solidly in the negatives (to -6degC) even on the sunny days.
This link looks useful - http://remotehuts.co.nz/huts/boo_boo/
I hope you get a response here from somebody that's actually been there.
Never tried Zit in winter. Nice walk in summer though. There was a fatality (or might have been a near miss) there a few years back on ice on the descent to top Kokotahi from Zit in winter. Just recall steep snow tussock on the east side - but would be shaded most of the day in winter. Not walked the western side as I followed the ridgeline south to Toaroha Saddle
Expect @glennj would know more if he's around
Yep,Glenns your man.
He gave me great advice a while ago when planning a Zit-Lathrop tramp.
Sadly a fall going up Adventure ridge stuffed that up for me.
I did this trip back in 1987, so even if I could remember the details I doubt they would be relevant today. I can well remember "The bivvy of many candles", though.
Bivvy of many candles is long gone. It was there (though no longer on its piles) in '07 but was replaced soon after with the hut relocated from Mid-Kokatahi.
I always assumed some deer culler asked for 4 boxes of candles in the next airdrop and instead got four BOXES of candles! If the real story is less prosaic then please don't tell me.

sounds like a continuing theme in this catchment.Boo Boo Hut gained its name from a bureaucratic cockup when, during culling days, the whole catchments cheese supply was airdropped to the hut AND the whole of the Coasts jam ration airdropped too.Apparently the rusting tins were still visible several years ago.Last year we had a boo boo there when one of our group had a heart attack on the way in & got medivaced out.
