Closed cell foam or air mat?
Besides comfort, is it worth getting an air mat over a closed cell foam mat? I was looking at getting a thermarest prolite but its like $250 where you can get their a closed cell foam mat for like $80.
If comfort is the only factor then ill go for the closed cell foam

Yeah, in another 10 years we will be saying the same thing about today - we will be even wussier than the wussiest wuss
I'm All Blacks playing weight & I snore. Used to use just a ground sheet as a lad in Scouts. Now, I sleep on my side. Bottoming-out is a major buying point for me. ;)
Let us know how you get on with your final choice ?.

@pro-active ahhh if your All Blacks playing weight then you certainly cannot be the "30 second spray and walk away" Asain guy in your profile pic ahaha
I stop shaving & eat well when I tramp.

"In the late 90's early 2000's when I was a young lad my uncle would used to take me out tramping and we would just use the cheap foam mat from the warehouse, old school itchy as hell woolen bush jersy and PVC jackets…
Looking back at thoes days and with the invention of modern gear, it seems like we have become wusses"
The cheap closed cell mats at warehouse are no different to the twice the price ones at tramping shops.
I still use a wool bush shirt. I prefer it (it is swandri merino though so not as itchy)
If wearing all wool breath ability becomes less important as woll doesnt get wet, It just gets heavy. As a result pvc in its day worked very well. Dont ever mix it with fleece though. Made that mistake once. Misty sleety day and more sweat was dripping from inside the sleeves as outside. Halfway down my fleece had gone crunchy with ice.
@Pro-active I bought the Thermarest Prolite which has an r-value of 2.2. I could have got the Prolite Plus with an r-value of 3.something which would have been an extra $50 but id rather just spend $10 on a closed cell foam mat from the warehouse and use that with the Prolite to bump the r-value up higher
That's 2 bits of kit ?.
Guess it depends on what you're doing ?.
I can get by with wearing more clothing or using a coat as an under/over blanket.
Happy trails, fdi4r978fg !
@Pro-active what sleeping mat do you use?
Exped SynMat UltraLight 7 (medium). Same as @nzbazza. Probably on Bivouac 'special' ?. Tho it's about getting what I want at a good price rather than buying something cos it's cheap.
May well be better out there now ?. This has lasted me several years.
