I've heard that as you travel, you sub-conciously take mental photos & VDO. The ability to replay these things mentally, is how you learn to find your way about.
An improvement is to be looking behind you from time to time, as scenery and features look different as you return back out.
The article stated that they got lost after losing reception, this means they didn't have offline maps, which is a rookie mistake.
I have always Google maps and Gaia topo maps downloaded onto my phone and on longer tramps a normal map.
