Five Auckland trampers rescued from Te Araroa Trai

This is really [stretching the definition of rescue](https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12050656): > Metcalfe said the group started out at 7am, but at 6pm they had not reached the end and were wet, cold, tired and only had one torch so called 111. If we were to charge people for irresponsibility, this would be the case wouldn't it?

The other thing with map&compass is that to use them you need to pay close attention to landmarks, topography. So even if they fail (eg you lose the map in a wind gust) you retain a mental map of all the landmarks on the route in. Whereas with a gps you retain the memory of an arrow on a screen.
Poring over a map is good fun in the evening or pit day. It's not quite the same with a GPS.
You're in Raetea Forest. You want to know how far it is to the end. You get out your map and compass. You look at landmarks, which happens to be trees, and more trees. You sigh, and put that useless stuff away, and look at that nice arrow on the screen.

Useless to people who've outsourced their navigation skill to an arrow on a screen.
I feel like you guys always repeat the same stuff in every thread, this forum is completely useless. Stop posting and go out tramping instead, seriously.

its a forum people are free to comment even if it is repeating stuff... but if you pay attention often its not just repeating its elaborating on the same subject with more information, if you're so sick of the forum bohwaz no one is forcing you to read it, you too are free to go and tramp more, or post something different instead of complaining about those who are making an attempt to write something
