Injured dog: Carry out or leave him?
God forbid this ever happening but if you took a dog on an two night three day tramping trip and you were say mid way through your second day and your dog got injured and was unable to walk what would you do? Attempt to carry him out, tie him up next to a water source and shelter and walk out for help, leave him loose and hope you can find him again when you get help or leave him for dead?
Iv never had to deal with this kind of situation but if it ever happened to me I know that the logical choice would be to leave him and walk out for help and hope I could find him again but that would break my heart leaving him on his own.
Has anyone been in this situation before?

Leave the dog with food and water,
Walk out as fast as possible,
Hire a helicopter AT YOUR OWN EXPENSE,
Then fly back and save dog.

Hi @Gaiters , thanks for reminding me about my profile, I hadn't updated it now I'm back in NZ.
If my suggestion above isn't compassionate enough, how about this:
Activate PLB,
Wait a short time for rescue helicopter,
Save dog,
Find out how many thousands of dollars it took the helicopter and all associated staff to save the dog,
Pay 100% of the dog's rescue costs OUT OF YOUR OWN POCKET.

I would pay for the thousands of dollers it would have taken to rescue my friend. Be it man or dog.
I hear all the comments and was expecting them.
I guess what got me big James was your profile. Buddhism was just a faze I was going through man,
Being someone who is quite Buddhist minded themselves, I was a little rocked by your mentality?
Let me ask you this, as a Buddhist monk?
How does money factor into Buddhist thinking? And what price does one put on life? Is the life of a dog worth less or more than the life of a human being?
You didn't need to delete your post madpom. We are allowed our opinions. I'm sure little dog would of left you to fend for yourself if you were faced with a life or death situation. Right?
If you are taking your dog into conservation land you are agreeing to look after the dog and protect wildlife from it.
If you are not equipped or willing to either put the dog down or arrange and pay for transportation to get it out if it is injured then you should not take it in.
Leaving a dog behind in conservation land is not an option. Dogs kill wildlife. Yes - even yours - when it gets desperate or hungry enough.
My 2p.

When you shattered your thigh down south. Would you have feasted on weka to remain alive madpom?
We're not going to agree here @gaiters.
It doesn't look like it. It's point we will all see differently, just surprised by yours on this considering how close you seem to be with your four legged friend, but no worries. When I originally saw this thread I thought oh this is one of these sorts of threads.
not sure what SAR's policy is around saving pets. the service is for saving people first and foremost.
if you set off a beacon your potentially competing for a rescue resource that may also be needed for a life and death rescue or medical emergency elsewhere. is it right to set off a beacon to rescue a dog? you could argue both ways, and i'm not going to argue it.
if you have two way comms and rescue services know its a dog needing rescue, would they come at all? problem is they would be held accountable for the expense and if someone died somewhere else waiting for a helicopter because it was rescuing a dog they'd be held accountable for that too.
its not a straight forward issue.
not demeaning the importance of the dogs here and the importance to the owner of the dog and how close people can be with their dogs.
it can be an emotional subject.
problem is if SAR will knowingly come to rescue a dog then it sets a precedence, people are then going to expect SAR to rescue a dog placing more pressure on resources
as it is there is the threat of up to 4 rescue helicopters that regularly carry out helicopter rescues having their services terminated, if that happens then rescue helicopters then have to travel a lot further to areas where rescues happen.
easy for me to speak, i don't own a dog, but i have had close bonds with various dogs and i do care about animal welfare a lot, but again its not straight forward about how you go about these difficult issues, a lot of people consider the dog a firm part of their family almost as important as any other human family member. but the law doesnt see it that way. and the rescue services may not either because of the accountabilities they have.
I fully agree with those rational logical and legal points.
But emotionally and in reality, I was giving an honest answer of what I would do. I knew it may set me up for a barrage of responses. But I wanted to give my honest perspective on the topic.
I would argue it in the media If it happened and I'm imagining it would be a very divisive 50-50 split.
