University tramping club forbidden to tramp

Universities have gone bad shit crazy in America the past decade, [here's another example](http://www.post-gazette.com/news/education/2018/04/18/Penn-state-university-ends-Outing-Club-trips/stories/201804180168?utm_campaign=Echobox&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Facebook), not sure about our own universities, but let's hope we can keep this trend in America:

> A key issue for administrators was that the Outing Club frequently visit locations with poor cell phone coverage. This wasn't an issue during the Coolidge administration, but now that cell phones exist, students are apparently expected to remain glued to them at all times.
When I here Penn State the first thing that comes to mind is the penitentiary. Looks like that is with good reason
Yip. Bat crazy.
You have to wonder at the independence level of the US students compared to those here. The way they are treated seems more like school kids ('you are our responsibility') than uni students ('we offer a learning environment - it's up to you to make the best of it').
Anyway - I can't imagine any kiwi uni contemplating successfully imposing that sort of ban - the tramping group would merely reorganise itself on facebook and continue as if nothing had happened. Any semblance of influence the uni had over club behaviour would have been lost in the process.

When I was instructing I took great interest in the Princeton University Freshers Program. All the students went on back packing trips and the guru had a great training program happening. There were some very instructive scenarios.
I envisage too that any students experiencing this heavy approach would just bypass the B/S by organising their own trips ad hoc via social media.
