Falcon Heavy rocket had too much grunt. They're gonna overshoot the Mars orbit trajectory and probably wind up in the asteroid belt. A bit of crowing about the display of power, but it looks like a messy end in sight. I think Musk's big picture is establishing a colony on another planet, because despite our intelligence, we apparently lack the capacity to stop destroying this one. So any stunt that can capture the public's imagination on this line of thinking can be justified. (And what a stunt!)

Establishing a colony on another planet for elites (if it is possible). I suspect if they put as much energy into preventing the destruction of this planet as they do into extraterrestrial developments, they could prevent this danger.

There was a suggestion that if they haven't sanitised everything to space agency standard, there could be interplanetary seeding of Earth bacteria ?. A billion years from now, inteligent life could be arguing the "Santa ClausTheory" of the origins of life.
