Digital Camera
How many of you take a camera tramping with you and what sort do you have, how good have you found it? What steps do you take to protect it in your pack? Thanks.

I know this is an old thread, but I have to sing the praises of one of the 2 best bits of gear I've ever bought (the other was a Huntech drymax lite hiviz top, in case you're wondering).
I have an Olympus Mju watherproof camera. It has sat on the chest strap of my pack for (almost) the length of the NZ alps. It has swum the width of the Raikaia (accidentally) and Taramakau (deliberately) and much of the length of the Ophir gorge (again deliberately). It has lasted 18 months if bushbashing possuming in the same position on my daypack. And it's even been through one warm 'heavy duty' wash (again accidentally). Oh, and the dog chewed up the case with it inside.
And it survived all this without a dent.
Not the best picture quality on account of the small lens remaining within the steel case even when zoomed. But tough, tough tough.
Snap! couldnt agree more mine has taken a hiding
I take my Canon 10D digital SLR with one lens. I wouldn't be caught without it. For protection, I have a small Lowepro Toploader which I really use. I tend to just sling my camera around my neck. For my impending trip, I am considering a Off Trail which is like the Top Loader with two lens tubes, one on each side of the body bag. These tubes will hold a drink bottle etc so could be handle for short walks.
Just use a normal point and shoot panasonic lumix...does the trick(see the results on my website) taken some nice pictures. Batteries last a long long time. Probably 300 or more photos. Without reviewing pictures and that. Comes in a pretty nice case, Dad carries it round in his pocket and it's still going. Just put it in the pack during river crossings, canyoning etc.
Hi Paul, I'm from NSW. Just bought a Canon 450D, 17-55 f2.8 IS USM lens, 70-300 F4/5.6 IS USM lens, and 50mm 1.8 lens. Use a top loader lowepro bag for camera and 2 lenses, and a lens bag I attach to the top loader for the big zoom. Heavy after using Canon S1, S3, S5 but as I am an enthusiast I put up with it. Been to NZ 5 times tramping, and tramping 3 tracks in March. Be a test with all the gear! I put the camera bags into a Kathmandu Glu On daypack which clips to my larger backpack. This has a little raincoat on it, should keep everything dry (I hope).
Point and shoot is enough. Not going to carry round a camera when i'm walking for 12 days and going to stop to take photos every 10 minutes. with the point and shoot just extract it from my pocket and snap then move on. Takes some fantastic photos too.
I carry a Canon 40D (w/ 10-20mm, 50mm and 70-200mm) I really do want to get a decent midrange zoom to cut back on some weight.
I also carry an Olympus waterproof camera which I strap to my pack as I find pulling the big camera out prevents me taking alot of shots so it's good to have one at hand, also to never have to worry about the rain/snow.
Depends on how keen you are on you photos.
Oh, and a light weight tripod is a MUST.
The IS lenses help to overcome the tripod. Taking RAW pics too gets a lot more detail in and good for post processing. My wife takes the Canon S5 IS which is a fantastic point and shoot, great results.
By the way this is peter1945, my computer is dead at the moment.
I know this is an old thread, but, I'll revive it. All my photos are generally taken on a Canon 300D with half-shot kit lens...
Last trip, my friend had a small waterproof CoolPix - I loved have a camera in my pocket (I borrowed it) and just snapping shots, but, missed having the SLR to get nicer shots.
I'm a bit torn - anyone bought a tramping camera recently?
I'm wondering if I'd like a new Panasonic Lumix, as featured in these wonderful ads

That panasonic is suppose to be a good camera. But have a look at the Canon D10 at the same time.
Here is a good comparison of all the current generation waterproof cameras.
