Hey all, it's been a while since I've posted!
Context: 5 passes trip in January
I'm looking for a way to receive the mountain radio forecast for the above trip in January. Are there any small portable radio receivers that you know of that are capable of receiving the South Island Mountain forecast daily updates?
Will a simple portable AM radio like the one in this link be sufficient?
Sinple answer is 'no'. The radio you show will only get you the 5am long range on RNZ reliably but not the mountain forecast. And yoy may even struggle to get overnight RNZ on a cheapie like that.
Options for mountain forecast were discussed here and the other threads referenced in the topic:
This subject was well covered in Madpom's article
Based on the criteria in the article I bought one of these
Works well but I've only tested it in AP, nothing further afield.
It's just another thing to carry so haven't been able to justify it on known routes when the forecast window was reasonably sound.
To summarise you need something capable of receiving SSB (also known as USB or BFO) including the 3345 kHz and 3261 kHz frequencies (Upper Side Band) of the North Island and South Island Mountain Radio services.
Other models in addition to @strider's are discussed in the linked thread.
Schwd times are on their websites ... currently both 7:30pm
