  • Mate, you know why we call them thongs, right? Because just like the other version of a thong, they split the crack! :D Nice one Pro! Maybe camp thongs. After mulling it over, I've decided on trail runners over boots or VFF. For several reasons. Boots are heavy, take ages to dry, and are cumbersome. Whilst Five Fingers are my all-time favourite footwear, Honora's words are ringing in my ears.... Plus I did a 24 hour, 147km run in them once, and yeah, my feet were rather sore afterwards. Also, I can't really afford to break a toe (the only potential downside to VFFs) on a 3000km tramp. So the question now is, which trail runners? I absolutely LOVED my Salomon Speed Cross 2's, and unless I come across something better, the new 3's are what I'm looking at. Thoughts/suggestions? :) I'm looking for durable, comfortable, quick-drying trail runners.

  • Torpedo 7 easter sale is on... most places should be having easter sales
  • Cheers Wayno. I now know exactly which pack, sleeping mat, shoes, and gaiters I'm getting. Still mulling over the shelter option, and looking for a good, light quilt as opposed to a sleeping bag. I also think I've sussed my midlayer, but at $300 for one midlayer, I want to research it a bit more.... I reckon I've got cooking gear just about sorted. I've already got my faithful Black Diamond Z poles, so the main thing I'm still toying with is shelter. I want to find a good-quality, sturdy, light-weight zip off pair of trousers. Had a pair of Columbia's when I spent 5 months in SE Asia. Other than a bit of a crotch stitch job, they held up fine. I think trousers will come down to what I find in a sale. ;)
  • Im not sure about trail runners with a pack, some TAT legs are 8 days. http://www.torpedo7.co.nz/products/SNBWHN5Q4/title/salomon-2015-quest-4d-2-gtx-boots 100 bucks off. Had mine for a fornight now, walked about 50 kms over two weekends, and declare them to be the most lightest comfortable boot i ever wore.
  • Over trousers, nah. Tramped my whole life without them, in all terains and weather. Macpac carry or used to carry a tough black pair of nylon trou, Cross terain they were called. In the winter and shoulder seasons i live in those, Give you a bit of wind chill protection, breath, almost as warm as polypros when wet without the soggy sagi syndrome. they are tough as anything surviving glisades, bush crashing, still going after 10 years, and at least 2000kms.

  • I always wear a layer less than everyone else as well. The polypros wont come out of the pact for a month or so yet but I do carry them. Still in a synthetic t shirt. Outer layer if required is light fleece but that will change soon to the swandri as this combines well with the poly and when it gets colder a long sleeve merino top like icebreaker but half the price (still the second most expensive piece of tramping aparral I own) If it gets bitterly cold a balaclava on the head makes a huge difference and wearing the short sleeve poly the longsleeve merino and the swany and Im ready for most things. I do own a down vest but cant wear it for more than 10 minutes or I cook. I sleep hot as well. Ive been asked if I find my bag warm enough as its thinner than most others (0 comfort rating -13 extreme) and Ive had to reply that the zip was undone. It only achieves those ratings with the hood up and Ive not used the hood yet
  • Jealous. Even on sunday in town, I was wearing a thermal layer and a permaloft jacket inside a cafe which had the doors open and I had to go back to the car and get a jacket and a hat. No breeze to speak of either. Seddon Bennington died wearing 6 layers of clothing. His companion, Rosie Jackson was only wearing 4. I can relate to that...http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/capital-life/features/4258473/Lost-how-tramp-turned-to-tragedy In winter, I take 2 down jackets! Many times since then my thoughts have strayed to Seddon and Rosie.

  • I think I have a different idea of a midlayer to some of you. To me, a midlayer is anything that isn't worn against the skin or a raincoat. I heat super quick, so will only carry ultra light rain wear to wear over pants (legs zipped off), and a t shirt most of the time. But, I am doing the TAT starting in August, so will need something for warmth. I am not interested in hiking stupid light, and ending up with hypothermia (had it a couple of times before, not fun). So according to my definition, both a down jacket and fleece are midlayers. Just so we're on the same page. :)
  • A very sobering article Honora. Thanks for posting. It is precisely because of stories like that that I always carry an emergency shelter, even on a short day hike.
