Moonbeam hut

Moonbeam hut is on a terrace on the TL bank of the Waitaha River 300m above the confluence with Moonbeam Torrent. It is an NZFS six bunker of 1969 vintage. It's in good condition and unlike many of its contemporaries has retained its open fire place during the DOC era.

Moonbeam hut would be a day's walk up from the Waitaha roadend for most people. The track above the Headlong Spur turnoff is not nice in places. A couple of slips would be a bit dodgy in wet weather & have caused some parties grief. I've been straight across the slips on the marked route in the dry and the second slip on the way up would deter many. This slip is much easier to cross higher up or to go completely over the top of. Besides the slips, sections of the track are choked with hook grass, cutty grass, fern species, flaxes & wispy scrub which make you look forward to boulder hopping sections where you can see where you are putting your feet. Moonbeam Torrent can be dangerous to ford after heavy rain!
