Meikles Hut

Meikles hut is derelict, and a DOC sign warns, "Building unsafe. No Entry."

The first Meikles Hut was an historic Depression era miners' hut. The remains of an old stamper battery which pre dates the Meikles Huts are beside/in the creek above where the track crosses the creek not far above the hut. This hut was rebuilt in the 1980's to the same specifications as the original hut by Ces Clark and crew of the New Zealand Forest Service.

Meikles hut is located just above the Moonlight track in the upper reaches of the Right Branch of Moonlight Creek. [This is the West Coast Moonlight in this instance. The area is named after the same gold prospector Moonlight of Central Otago & Murchison area fame.]
