Carew Falls June 2011
We popped into have a look at the falls yesterday. For me it was the first visit for many years. The track starts where described in Matthew's notes. In the old days this track didn't exist & you used a track on the other side of the creek. It started just west of the hotel/lodge & followed a water race from an early 1900's private power scheme some of the way. The current track is signposted as taking 30 mins one way. This is generous!
For those interested in trees the current track passes several large rimu and one big matai. It also passes one good form medium sized hinau, a less well known native, that is also a timber species.
Off the track but within a km of the falls are some very significant matai trees. These specimens are greater than two metres diameter through at breast height. Some are of good form whilst others are multi headed. These matai would be amongst the best remaining in NZ. There are also quite a few very good rimu trees near the big matais.
