Upper Windley Hut
Eyre Mountains/Taka Rā Haka Conservation Park
A comfy 4-bunk hut in the upper Windley Valley, Eyre Mountains. The hut is at the back of a clearing on the west side of the creek, 200m downriver of the forks of the main Windley River and the side creek which drains from the pass to Lincoln Hut in the Oreti.
The hut has 4 bunks and a fireplace. There's plenty of firewood around, and water is a cruel 100m descent to the creek. The only disappointment is the lack of chairs / benches to sit on.
The Windley is a tight valley with gorged beech forested sections, opening out to 10-20m wide flats with grassy clearings. Travel upriver from the Lower Windley hut is reportedly slow and frequently in-river. However, reasonable passes cross from the upper Windley to Lincoln Hut in the Oreti and Ashton hut in the Ashton. In summer the peaks on the west side are easily climbable. A high route to Islands hut is also possible, climbing the ridge opposite the hut. The valley route to islands is hard: gorges and waterfalls.
