Frisco hut

Frisco hut is on the TR of the Hokitika River less than 2kms below the junction with the Mungo River. It is situated up in the high bush approximately 400 vertical metres above the river. The route up the Hokitika needed to be high to avoid Frisco Canyon.

This hut receives very few walk in visitors. Access until recently was very challenging because the old tracks either side of the hut had become completely overgrown in places through not having been cut for close to 40 years. In 2009 MM & I accessed the hut ok from the Diedrichs Range. Some years prior to this regular tramping companion JH & a DOC employee managed to follow the old track down from the Poet - Bluff track with some difficulty. This track has been re cut in March 2011 by two "Permolat" volunteers.
