This photo was taken after walking through from Waiuta on the old miners track one wet day.

I've also gained access to Big River or the 4x4 road leading to it by walking up Slab Hut creek from the main road near Reefton Saddle and by coming up from the Inangahua side via both Rainy and Deep Creeks.

Driving and biking in the 4x4 track that goes to Big River & the DOC hut has been done too and that is the easiest way to get in there bar using a helicopter.
